A second sinkhole has opened up at the Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre this morning, just 40 metres from where a large sinkhole appeared in February.

A truck driver passing through the car park said he felt as if the ground was suddenly unsteady beneath his wheels, then shortly after, the sinkhole appeared.

Earlier in the year, a giant sinkhole appeared overnight at the shopping centre, causing a public frenzy as it grew to 15 metres wide.

The Baldivis carpark sinkhole that appeared in February was still under construction when the second hole appeared.

Workers repairing the larger hole were quickly on site, closing the surrounding area in the interest of public safety.

A spokesperson for the shopping centre said work was underway to repair the issue.

“We have isolated the affected area in the Stockland Baldivis car park and our contractor has commenced works to repair the hole,” they said in a statement.

“The safety of our customers is our highest priority and we are investigating the cause of this issue.”

The centre remained open today but customers and the public are being kept away from the area.
