Rockingham student Max Elphick will represent Australia on the world futsal stage later this year after being selected to play in the national under-13 team at the AMF boy’s Futsal World Cup in Catalonia, Spain.
The 12-year-old was the only WA player selected.
Undertaking a football scholarship at Safety Bay High School, and training with the Soccer de Brazil academy, Max dedicates most of his time to honing his football and futsal skills.
Max, who has represented WA in national tournaments, said he was excited to compete in his first international competition.
“I’m mostly excited about playing (futsal) and making new friends,” he said.
His coach and Soccer de Brazil academy founder Guilherme Carniel will also travel to Spain as the head coach of the under-13 team.
Carniel joins a long list of qualified staff at the Federation of Australia Futsal as one of the most experienced futsal coaches in Australia.
He has also coached with FC Barcelona Escola in Barcelona, Spain, and FC Gremio in Parana, Brazil.
Carniel said while Max would face many challenges being one of the youngest players in the team, the tournament could open the door to many opportunities in the future.
“This is the big picture,” he said.
“If all goes well there could be more opportunities to come.”
The week-long competition will kick off with an opening ceremony on October 28.
