International Nurses Day on Sunday, May 12, will celebrate the importance of nurses in the community.
Elizabeth Vernooy has been a nurse for 32 years and has worked at Rockingham General Hospital for eight years.
“I am from South Africa and moved to Australia 10 years ago,” she said.
“Being a nurse is a childhood dream come true.
“In Year 7 at school I dreamt of being a nurse.”
Ms Vernooy said working in the intensive care unit could be challenging, with highs and lows.
“It can be a rapidly changing environment,” she said.
“I deal with it in a calm and professional manner; you can’t stress.
“We share the joy with the family when someone recovers. We also have to support the family when someone passes away.”
