Rockingham is set for a major tourism boost with one of Australia’s most distinctive horseracing experiences, the Rockingham Beach Cup, set to return in 2019.
Tickets go on sale from July 1 for the November 17 event, which attracted more than 950 people to its exclusive beach marquees and 50,000 visitors to the Rockingham Foreshore area when it was last run in 2017.
The cup combines two of WA’s most beloved pastimes — a day at the races and a day at the beach — on the Rockingham Foreshore, and a range of tickets will be on offer, including a front-row experience in the Palm Beach Club, which will host exclusive fashion shows, and gourmet food and drink right on the beach at the finish line.
The Rockingham Beach Cup, hosted by the Rotary Club of Palm Beach WA, is the only beachside racing event in WA. The Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation project will provide the backdrop for the cup.
“The idea of that foreshore upgrade was to attract visitors and tourists to the area and I think the Rockingham Beach Cup fits perfectly in line with that,” Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said.
“We’re excited the race has returned. Obviously having missed last year with the works down there, the organisers are planning a bigger and better event and we’re looking forward to working with them to make it successful and help attract not just locals, but tourists from throughout Australia and internationally.”
Mr Sammels also hoped the cup would create an economic spin-off for the area, especially those who felt the pinch during the foreshore redevelopment works.
“Hopefully this will be a bit of a reprieve for those businesses, and also for the accommodation providers, other shops around the city and the shopping centre,” he said.
All proceeds from the Rockingham Beach Cup support projects of the Rotary Club of Palm Beach and its beneficiaries, including Australian Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and Variety WA.
Tickets will be available from rockinghambeachcup.com.au.
